Synchronous conferencing is the formal term used in science Science refers to any systematic knowledge-base or prescriptive practice that is capable of resulting in a prediction or predictable type of outcome. In this sense, science may refer to a highly skilled technique or practice, in particular in computer-mediated communication Computer-Mediated Communication is defined as any communicative transaction which occurs through the use of two or more networked computers. While the term has traditionally referred to those communications that occur via computer-mediated formats (i.e., instant messages, e-mails, chat rooms) it has also been applied to other forms of text-based, collaboration Computer-supported collaboration research focuses on technology that affect groups, organizations communities and societies, e.g. voice mail, text chat. It grew from cooperative work study of supporting people's work activities and working relationships. As net technology increasingly supported a wide range of recreational and social activities, and learning Electronic learning is a type of Technology supported education/learning (TSL) where the medium of instruction is through computer technology, particularly involving digital technologies. E-learning has been defined as "pedagogy empowered by digital technology" . In some instances, no face- to- face interaction takes place. E-learning is, to describe online chat Online chat can refer to any kind of communication over the Internet, but is primarily meant to refer to direct one-on-one chat or text-based group chat , using tools such as instant messengers, Internet Relay Chat, talkers and possibly MUDs. The expression online chat comes from the word chat which means "informal conversation" technologies. It has arisen at a time when the term chat Online chat can refer to any kind of communication over the Internet, but is primarily meant to refer to direct one-on-one chat or text-based group chat , using tools such as instant messengers, Internet Relay Chat, talkers and possibly MUDs. The expression online chat comes from the word chat which means "informal conversation" had a negative connotation. Today it is occasionally also extended to mean audio/video conferencing A videoconference is a set of interactive telecommunication technologies which allow two or more locations to interact via two-way video and audio transmissions simultaneously. It has also been called visual collaboration and is a type of groupware. It differs from videophone in that it is designed to serve a conference rather than individuals or instant messaging Instant messaging is a form of real-time communication between two or more people based on typed text. The text is conveyed via devices connected over a network such as the Internet systems, given they provide a text-based Usually used in reference to a computer application, especially a computer game, a text-based application is one whose primary input and output are based on text rather than graphics. This does not mean that text-based applications do not have graphics, just that the graphics are secondary to the text multi-user chat function. The word synchronous in this case is not to be considered a technical term, but rather describing how it is perceived by humans—chat happens in real time before your eyes.
Synchronous conferencing protocols include:
- IRC Internet Relay Chat is a form of real-time Internet text messaging (chat) or synchronous conferencing. It is mainly designed for group communication in discussion forums, called channels, but also allows one-to-one communication via private message as well as chat and data transfers via Direct Client-to-Client (Internet Relay Chat)
- PSYC PSYC is a flexible text-based protocol for delivery of data to a large number of recipients or people. It is used for text chat, instant messaging, presence display, newscasting and social networking (Protocol for SYnchronous Conferencing)
- SILC The SILC protocol can be divided in three main parts: SILC Key Exchange protocol, SILC Authentication protocol and SILC Packet protocol. SILC protocol additionally defines SILC Commands that are used to manage the SILC session. SILC provides channels (groups), nicknames, private messages, and other common features. However, SILC nicknames, in (Secure Internet Live Conferencing protocol)
- XMPP Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol is an open, XML-based protocol originally aimed at near-real-time, extensible instant messaging (IM) and presence information (e.g., buddy lists), but now expanded into the broader realm of message oriented middleware. It remains the core protocol of the Jabber Instant Messaging and Presence technology (Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol)

- MUDs Mud is a liquid or semi-liquid mixture[vague] of water and some[vague] combination of soil, silt, and clay. Ancient mud deposits harden over geological time to form sedimentary rock such as siltstone or solid, mudrock lutites. When geological deposits of mud are formed in estuaries the resultant layers are termed bay muds. Mud is closely related (Multi User Dungeons)
